I thought I’d lost, forever, the take Amy Hempel had on my story, once, a long time ago. But what do you know, apparently my hoarding disorder has its ups — I found Jim’s introduction to a “reading” some of us stumbled through.

She said about Ruth Steinhardt’s “Our Zoe” that it “used admirably controlled prose to look closely at people whose restraint with one another was stretched to the very limit.” She said about Miles Klee’s “All the Funny Things You Do” that it had “four stories’ worth of funny and energetic grotesquerie.” And she said about Katherine Lee’s winning story, “The New,” that it stood out for “the care in its writing that conveyed the shorthand understanding between intimates, the sadness that does not turn bitter, and the quiet humor that shows you who a person is.”
